Financial Freedom is a wonderful state of existence. When you have it, you never need to worry about paying your bills or where your next paycheck will come from. Job security is irrelevant because you will no longer need to have one!

In order to understand really understand what it means, we first must discuss two very important terms, Wealth and Financial Independence.

Webster’s Dictionary defines Wealth as:

1. the state of being rich; prosperity; affluence
2. a large amount or abundance of valuable material resources, possessions or riches.

In the context of this conversation, Wealth is the number of months forward that you could support your current lifestyle, your home and your expenses, if you were to stop working and earning a living. Talk about financial freedom!

If you were to suddenly stop working (due to a disability or retirement, for example), how long could you sustain your lifestyle? How long could you pay your bills before you were broke? It’s a rather unsettling proposition, isn’t it? How long will your savings hold out? Do you own assets that will generate enough income to replace your salary?

Financial Independence means that your assets and investments are substantial enough that they will forever generate adequate income for you to live and enjoy the lifestyle you wish.

People who have attained Financial Independence have the freedom and ability to do (or not do) virtually anything they wish. They never again have to worry about their income.

Financial Independence gives you the security of having options.

You may desire to keep working. But wouldn’t it be wonderful knowing that you no longer have to? Wouldn’t it be nice to work (or volunteer) in a field you love, not for the money, but simply because you love it?

When you’ve build up your assets to the point that they are generating enough income to at least replace your earned income (your job), you have attained It! You are now financially independent. You no longer need to depend on your job for income. There is a serenity you enjoy, knowing your expenses are forever covered.

It is liberating. When you reach Financial Independence, financial security is yours forever. It’s like having the weight of all of your money problems lifted off of your shoulders.

Financial Freedom is a goal that every couple should have.
